Support in Scotland Strong As 72% of Scots Support Rejoining EU
The SNP’s Europe and EU Accession spokesperson, Alyn Smith MP has slammed Alister Jack for his ‘palpably false’ claim that there is no desire in Scotland to rejoin the European Union.
Scotland voted 62% in favour of remaining in the EU in the 2016 referendum, and recent polls have put support for Scotland rejoining as high as 72%.
Mr Smith warned the Tories against ‘projecting their wishes upon the people of Scotland’ and said Scotland would have the chance to rejoin the EU by grasping the full powers of independence.
Commenting, Alyn Smith MP said:
“I presume, trying to be charitable, that Alister Jack simply misspoke when he said ‘there is no desire in Scotland to rejoin the EU’ because it is surely even reached up to the ivory towers of the Scotland Office that this is a palpably false claim.
“It is quite obvious that Scotland’s removal from the EU against our will has been a disaster for us as a nation, as a society, for our economy, our fishers, farmers and everyone else.
“Projecting their own wishes upon the people of Scotland will do the Tories no good, and only serve to remind people in Scotland that the only way to rejoin the EU is by grasping the full powers of independence.”
